History of the Stargate Series: from the 1994 film to SG-1, Atlantis, and Universe.
Origins of the Franchise
The Stargate franchise began with the 1994 movie directed by Roland Emmerich and written by Dean Devlin. Despite mixed reviews, the film grossed nearly $200 million worldwide and introduced audiences to the concept of a wormhole device connecting distant worlds.
Stargate SG-1
In 1997, Stargate SG-1 debuted, created by Brad Wright and Jonathan Glassner. It ran for 10 seasons and 214 episodes, becoming the longest-running North American sci-fi series of its time. The show expanded the mythology, introducing the Goa’uld, Tok’ra, and Ancients, blending military science fiction with ancient alien lore.
Spin-offs and Legacy
The success of SG-1 led to Stargate Atlantis (2004–2009) and Stargate Universe (2009–2011). Each series explored new galaxies, civilizations, and conflicts, cementing Stargate as a cult science fiction saga. The franchise also included Stargate Infinity, an animated series, and several direct-to-DVD movies.
